Age UK

Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland sought to extend the usable space at their Grade II listed Clarence House in Leicester by creating a new Information Hub. Designed as a light, welcoming environment, the facility allows older people and their families to engage with Age UK volunteers and learn about the charity’s services. Corporate Architecture Ltd (CAL) oversaw the project from inception to completion across all RIBA stages, working closely with Age UK and Leicester City Council’s Conservation Team during a 12-month design process.

The new structure had to respect the historic character of Clarence House and its central location. Proportions, scale, and massing were carefully refined to align with the existing building’s fenestrations and detailing, ensuring harmony with the heritage site while meeting the client’s functional needs.

The final design introduced a predominantly glazed, modern structure, maintaining visual permeability to Clarence House’s historic façade while creating a striking “wow factor.” A restrained palette of materials ensured the two buildings complement one another, with the steel frame and subtle colours giving the new addition its own contemporary identity. Sustainability was prioritised with solar glazing panels to prevent overheating and reduce air-conditioning costs, alongside energy-efficient heat pumps. Fire-rated glazing addressed safety concerns near the existing building.

The completed Information Hub minimises external visual impact while providing a clear focal point for service users. Large glazed panels reflect the warmth of Clarence House’s red brick, creating a sense of cohesion. High ceilings and exposed building services emphasise openness and light, while coloured glass panels add vibrancy. A discreetly integrated kitchen and uncluttered layout enhance usability, reflecting a user-focused design approach.

This modern facility complements the historic Clarence House, offering a functional and welcoming space that supports Age UK’s mission to provide accessible and meaningful support for older people and their families.
